Die Bezeichnung TRAXX steht für Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility. Die Baureihe 185.1, direkt abgeleitet von der Baureihe 145 nun in geänderter Bauart und Baureihenbezeichnung, war jetzt für beide in Europa üblichen Wechselspannungssysteme 15 kV/16 2/3 Hz und 25 kV/50 Hz einsetzbar. Bei einem Gewicht von 84 t leistet sie 5,6 MW Dauerleistung und ist für 140 km/h zugelassen.
